What does the year written on the bottle indicate?
The year or vintage written on the bottle indicates the year that the grapes were harvested. Some producers also include the year the wine was bottled, and some wines don’t even have a vintage. Wines which don’t have vintages usually indicate that the wine was a coupage (blend) of wines from various vintages. Each year is different than the previous, mainly depending on the weather.
Vintage charts may be useful to determine whether a vintage of a certain region is worth drinking now or keeping for a few years for the wine to mature in the bottle.
